Branding
Outside Inc. approached us at the end of 2023 to build an identity and produce additional assets for the inaugural Outside Festival. Hosted in Denver in June 2024, the fest boasted big name musical acts, film screenings, industry-leading speakers, the latest in sporting gear, and a host of physical activities to stoke the love for the great outdoors.
I produced the initial branding package, which included custom “Festival” lettering locked up to the iconic Outside Inc. logo, typography, colors, textures, illustration style, and photo treatments. Outside wanted a bold identity that stood out from the festival landscape, and over a breakneck 2 week period, we landed on a look that tapped into the human desire to imitate nature, using techniques that are natural, done by hand, and inspired by base instincts (scribbling, ripping, layering, etc.). I created the initial wordmark by hand with marker, and made a custom slanted grid paper for drawing the script. The color palette is comprised of faded bright pops, inspired by sun-faded vintage sporting gear. The Risograph printing-inspired photo overlay provided Outside’s internal team with an easy-to-use and ownable treatment that worked with any artist-provided photo.
The massive amount of social posts, advertising graphics, signage, and festival merchandise were created alongside a team of freelance designers, illustrators, and video editors, to whom I am eternally indebted! The festival was attended by over 18,000 people, “helping forge a model for a new national outdoor recreation gathering” (Denver Sun).
