SiriusXM needed a vision to inform the future of the service. With the need to be inclusive of current UI trends that appealed to their existing audience while also being aspirational and expandable, we underwent an in-depth research and workshop phase to arrive at a refreshed look and feel.

We conducted extensive design workshops with the Sirius team to pinpoint their visual interests, opportunities to stand out from competitors, and areas of improvement within the existing brand. Inspired by cultural touch points familiar to the SXM user base, we presented updated color, typography, and photography rules that complemented the new and improved user experience.

My primary role in this project was working alongside experience designers to execute app designs and to provide feedback and guide design direction. Additionally, I developed and designed a refreshed version of SXM’s wordmark and legacy dog mascot.

As a leader in audio entertainment, the majority of the SiriusXM audience experienced their product exclusively in the car. Though they have the most diverse content offering, including music, talk, and sports, their existing app and web experience did not compete with other streaming services. The app needed a refresh, reviving how the core functionality looked and worked, while highlighting what makes SiriusXM stand apart from their competitors.

We drew inspiration not just from other audio platforms, but from other digital applications in completely different industries and uniquely-human social experiences, to introduce new mechanics for sorting, shuffling, and searching for content.

With a vast collection of station-specific logos that were individual brands of their own, we developed a new approach to photography within the app. Making small adjustments in how logos were displayed and what type of images were used created an experience that felt fresh without departing from the existing system.

When building the system, a variety of platforms and devices needed to be considered. We created a dynamic toolkit of assets that could be used across car media players, smartphone devices, tablets, tvs, and the web.

Additionally, we were asked to rethink their wordmark and legacy dog mascot:

Our primary goal in reinvigorating the SiriusXM wordmark was to improve the mark’s symmetry and mathematical harmony. The new mark is a more balanced and edgy take on the original, with clean lines and modern typography.

Without straying too far away from the strong personality of the Stella, the dog mascot, we maintained much of the strange, idiosyncratic spirit of the original character design. Wanting to convey bold progress within the brand, we reimagined the dog as a stargazer, with its deft nose and satellite tail pointed to the sky.
